Paddle wheel flow meters belong to the category of insertion type flow meters. The rotating paddle wheel generates a signal in proportion to the velocity of the moving fluid which is read in terms of the flow rate. Because the pipe's cross-sectional area is known and remains fixed the average velocity is an indication of the flow rate.
